Technology disrupts; humanity differentiates

Much is being written and spoken about the “human skills” leaders need today; the capabilities that differentiate human capacity from technological and machine capability.

By human skills, I mean those uniquely ours; skills that may be supported by technology but never replaced by it.

Over the weekend I witnessed a moment that captured what these skills truly look like.

I was sitting at a local café having a coffee. At the table beside me, a woman with her dog was joined by someone whom I assumed to be a close friend. Their warm greeting suggested they had a close and valued friendship.

Not long into the conversation, the woman with her dog, began sharing what was clearly a distressing story. Her friend’s expression shifted immediately to shock, concern, and care.

What I witnessed next was a powerful demonstration of three of the most differentiating human capacities:

  1. EMPATHY- she listened deeply. She didn’t interrupt, nor rush to solutions. She ensured her friend was fully seen, heard, and understood.

  2. PRESENCE - nothing else mattered in that moment. No mobiles. No distractions. Her attention never drifted. Her intention and attention were fully aligned.

  3. CONNECTION - at one point, both had tears running down their cheeks.

She then gently reached across and placed her hand on her friend’s arm. Not just emotional connection but human connection.

In that moment I recognised that in a world increasingly shaped by technology, these are the most valuable ‘human skills’ that differentiate true leadership.

INVITATION

Reflect for a moment:

  1. What does it truly mean to be human in the way I lead?

  2. What do others say or do that makes me feel valued and appreciated?

  3. What do I believe are my unique human skills?

  4. How might I bring more of these skills in service of others?

Technology may expand what you can do, but it is your humanity, your capacity to see, listen, and care for others, that will determine the quality and impact of your leadership.

May you flourish.
