The State of Teams - A Decade of Data

Over the past month I’ve been analysing ten years of data from coaching executive and leadership teams. The results are clear, whilst unsurprising, they present infinite possibilities.

My devotion to work with executive teams is because, at their best, they deliver outcomes no individual or group can. Teams have access to the collective capacity and capability to unlock possibilities that would otherwise not exist.

Michael Dell once said, “A culture of teamwork is an organisation’s most competitive advantage; it’s the only thing a competitor can’t copy.” In the current complex business environment, this truth has never been more relevant.

Distilled to its essence, the data shows:

  • 80% of teams flounder more than they flourish

  • 70% report a lack of trust

  • 65% function more as a group than a team

These findings come from an analysis of a decade of data using the 5 Disciplines of a High Performing Team assessment measured at the start and end of team coaching programs to assess the ROI on the team coaching.

Over the coming issues of this newsletter, I’ll share the patterns, approaches, and interventions that helped executive teams make the shift from siloed groups to aligned, high-performing teams capable of extraordinary results.
